“Mama, why aren’t they wearing clothes?”

That question caught me by surprise. It was asked by one of my kids as I was working out. The women in that DVD workout were wearing sports bras and little booty shorts; the men were wearing shorts, with some (actually most) shirtless.

“Well,” I answered, “that’s just how they work out.”

It got me thinking, though.

When I go to the gym, when I teach a class, when I workout at home or in public, how do I dress? Not like the people in that particular program. I might be wearing spandex but I dress much more modestly.

Fall has arrived and October is just a few days away! It’s time for a new goal tracker. One of my favorite things about fall is watching the leaves change color, from green to vibrant reds and yellows and oranges. So we are turning over a new LEAF with this upcoming month’s tracker! Let’s make this month “unbeLEAFable” and give it your 100% towards whatever your goal may be.

Download and print your tracker today. (I also laminate mine.) I use my tracker to keep me motivated with my workouts. One day a week is a rest day, and I do allow myself a sticker on my chart for that day. You set your intention for the month and use the chart to track your progress!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been fascinated by stories of missionaries. I would read missionary biographies as a little girl and was intrigued by these men and women, serving God and sharing the Gospel in exotic, far-away lands. Missionaries are rockstars in my mind. I have always been curious about their lives and their calling, and I especially admire their love for God and the people they serve.

Now, as an adult, I have several friends who serve as missionaries and you know what? I still think they are rockstars…and I’m just as fascinated now as I was when I was 8-years-old! There have been times when my husband and I have wondered if God may be calling us into missions type work. God’s answer to that appears to be ‘no’ or at least, ‘not yet.’

“How’s that working for you?”

That question may sound familiar. Back in my days of watching lots of daytime television, I remember talk show host Dr. Phil asking that of his guests, often before he helped re-direct their behavior or actions towards something more positive.

This is a question I’ve been asking myself recently. In the last two years, I’ve gained 10 pounds. Some people tell me, “It’s muscle.” No, oh how I wish that were true. How do I know? I know by the way my clothes fit, the need to go up a couple of sizes, not just in my pants but in my bras, too.

It’s so hard for me to share this. It was much easier to share my successes, as the extra weight was coming off. But the reality is I need to get a handle on this NOW before I’m back where I started in 2011. I’ve learned one of the hardest parts of weight loss is maintaining it once you reach your goal. I’m guessing I’m not the only one who may be struggling with this, and I wanted to share it here with the hope it will encourage you or another person struggling with this, too.

Unlike bathing suits, flip-flops fit every year.

Maybe that’s why I love my flip-flops so much. I was trying to think of an image for the August Goal Tracker and I kept thinking of the beach. I already created a tracker earlier this year with a sun, so I wanted to find something different. I played around with a beach umbrella, but I thought it looked a bit unbalanced. And then I thought of flip-flops! More »
