What is it about winter that packs on the pounds?

Is it the fact that it gets darker earlier…

…or maybe it’s the holidays?

…or I’m just cold and my body wants to hold onto whatever fat it can to keep warm?

Are you, like me, looking in the mirror and thinking, “Warm weather is just around the corner…how do I get rid of these spring rolls?”

Here are my top 11 ways to Spring Clean Your Fitness Routine!

  1. Schedule your workouts each day of the week, and don’t cancel on yourself. I’ve started working out first thing in the morning. It used to be a struggle to get out of bed. Now, I set my alarm (my phone) across the room. When it goes off, I have to get up quickly…otherwise, my kids will hear it and be up and out of bed, too. I have my workout clothes picked out so it’s easy to slip them on right away, and get my workout done first thing.
  2. Consider signing up for a race or event. It will be motivation to get moving as you start training (see also Tip #4)
  3. Invest in some new workout clothes or shoes. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive, just something that makes you feel good when you are wearing it.
  4. Find a buddy!! Accountability is key. You don’t want to let down a friend. When you know someone is counting on you, you’ll be more motivated to stick to your goals. Sign up to run a race together. Start a workout program together. Check in daily to see how each of you are doing. Join one of my online groups…hint, hint! 🙂 I have a new group starting soon! 5. Download new workout music. My playlist is feeling a little tired right now. It’s time to get some new tunes and mix things up a little!
  6. Clean out your pantry and refrigerator. This is something I do every month with my challengers. I love it when I can look in my refrigerator and find something without having to dig for it! And it makes it easier to choose healthy foods when they aren’t buried in the back.
  7. Visit a farmer’s market.I don’t know what it is, but I get so excited at all the fresh produce at farmer’s markets. Take advantage of the seasonal produce and try a few new recipes, too!
  8. Swap out your scale for performance and progress! Rather than weighing in everyday, choose one day a week to weigh in (or don’t weigh in at all, if that number discourages you). Take progress photos. Focus on how far or how long you run. Count the number of reps you are able to complete with good form. Keep track of it from week to week. I just took my PT Test for my new workout program. I’m excited to see how much progress I make in the next four months. The scale is just a measure of your gravitational force. It doesn’t tell you how strong or how beautiful you are!!
  9. Change your focus!! This is key! When I stopped focusing on the number on the scale and instead turned my attention to overall health and wellness, that’s when I started seeing results! I set a goal for one month to workout three times a week. That’s it. No changes to the way I ate. No deadline for reaching a certain number on the scale. Just a commitment to workout three times a week. Once that became a habit, I added a new goal. I’ve kept that up for 3+ years. One goal, one habit at a time. I’m still a work in progress, and always will be…but I’m a different person than when I first started this journey back in 2011-2012.
  10. Plan outdoor activities with friends. Meet up at the park and take a walk with your kids. Go hiking! Just get outside and enjoy the warm weather, even if it’s just your front yard. I’ve been known to do burpees in my driveway as the kids ride their bikes around me!
  11. Reward yourself (and not with chocolate cake…that defeats the purpose!). Decide now how you will reward yourself for sticking to your goals. Will you get a manicure or a pedicure? Maybe a new dress? Is there a book you want to read? Some of my challengers use a Sweat Stash jar. They pay themselves $1 in the jar for every workout, and when they reach a certain amount, they treat themselves to something like new workout clothes. Whatever it takes to stay motivated!!
