“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”
― Charles M. Schulz

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but I have never been a jewelry kind of girl: give me chocolate and I’m happy. Oh, how I love chocolate…I used to enjoy a mocha a day; my breakfast pizza was sprinkled with a few mini chocolate chips; and I will always opt for a chocolate dessert if given the choice. Chocolate has been the most challenging eating habit for me to adjust, simply because I crave it so much. But I found a way to beat my cravings and still enjoy chocolate. . .wanna know how?

The same portion has 1.8 grams of fiber, which is 5 percent of the daily intake for men and 7 percent for women. – Read more about the benefits of unsweetened cocoa powder here.

So it sounds a little healthier than a chocolate bar…but my guess is you have tasted unsweetened baking cocoa: it’s kind of bitter and not nearly as tasty as chocolate. I love how I have learned to eat the foods I enjoy, and not feel deprived. I learned some ways to use unsweetened baking cocoa without adding lots of sugar or making a batch of my favorite Christmas cookies.

  • Yogurt: I add a 1/2 teaspoon of cocoa powder, and 1 tablespoon of peanut butter to 6 ounces (one cup) of plain Greek yogurt. . .a perfect meal!
  • Oatmeal: I still enjoy “chocolate” at breakfast, only it comes in the form of a teaspoon of cocoa powder sprinkled on my oatmeal, along with a little bit of cinnamon and a 1/2 cup of blueberries. I cannot wait to eat breakfast every day.
  • Protein drinks: I add a teaspoon of cocoa powder to my protein drink. So delicious!
  • Hot cocoa: Oh my goodness! I am not a fan of artificial sweeteners and still have mixed feelings about stevia, but this hot cocoa drink featured here is absolutely delicious.
  • Chili or rub ingredient: I haven’t tried cocoa powder in my chili or on my fish yet, but it’s coming. . .so many options for cocoa powder.

What about you? Do you have cravings that keep you from eating healthy? I have definitely been surprised at how much my craving for chocolate is satisfied when I opt for cocoa powder.
